Das Mozilla.org wurde 1998 von Netscape als Open-Source-Projekt gestartet, um eine freie Alternative gegenüber dem übermächtigen Internet Explorer zu schaffen. Dort stellt der Browser-Pionier den Quellcode für den Communicator inklusive Navigator und anderen Internet-Tools zur Verfügung. Der Name kommt von dem ersten Codenamen des Netscape Navigator und ist heute in Form eines Comic-Dinosauriers das Maskottchen der Site. Neben dem Browser enthält Mozilla eine E-Mail-Anwendung, einen Newsreader, einen HTML-Editor sowie den Instant-Messenger Chatzilla.
